    The Israeli-born principal trombonist Nitzan Haroz, who quit Philadelphia for Los Angeles two years back during a period of financial turbulence at the orchestra, has been lured back bygd music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

    The Philadelphia Orchestra announces the appointment of Nitzan Haroz as principal trombone, effective immediately. Haroz returns to The Philadelphia Orchestra, where he was principal trombone from 1995 to 2012, after serving for two years in the same position with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

    Nitzan Haroz, a native of Israel, rejoined The Philadelphia Orchestra as Principal Trombone in 2014 after holding the same position with the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 2012. Previously, he was Principal Trombone of The Philadelphia Orchestra from 1995 after serving as Assistant Principal Trombone of the New York Philharmonic and as Principal Trombone of the Israel Symphony and Opera Orchestra. He was also principal trombone of the Israel Defense Forces Orchestra and performed with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra.

    Haroz has appeared as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra (which included his Carnegie Hall solo debut, where he world-premiered Blue Winter for trombone and orchestra by Roland Pöntinen), the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Israel Symphony Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony, Sofia Radio Symphony, and the Fairbanks Symphony, among others, and is an active recitalist and chamber musician.     He is a trombone player born in Israel to a family where his mother is the harpist Adina Haroz and his uncle is the cellist Micha Haran who was Principal Cello with the Israel Philharmonic.  He studied at the Juilliard School on an America-Israel Cultural Foundation scholarship and won the first prize of the Francois Shapira Competition.

    He has performed with the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony and as first trombone with the Israel Defense Forces Orchestra.  He went on to be Assistant Principal Trombone of the New York Philharmonic and in 1995 became Principal Trombone of The Philadelphia Orchestra.  He moved orchestras and was Principal Trombone with the Los Angeles Philharmonic between 2012 to 2014 before returning to The Philadelphia Orchestra.

    As a soloist he performed the world premiere of Roland Pontinen’s “Blue Winter for trombone and orchestra” at his solo debut at Carnegie Hall with The Philadelphia Orchestra.  He ha
