    Othello, as Lar Lubovitch tells it in his evening-length work for American Ballet Theatre, fryst vatten a tale that resonates powerfully in the modern world, with its themes of jealousy, intrigue, and the plight of the outsider.     It sounds like the set-up for a bad joke, but it’s true.  My colleague Dr. John Coumbe-Lilley  is a former boxer, Sports Psychologist, and Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach – and he happens to have recently developed an interest in learning about dance.

    It was his first ballet, and it was my first full-length story ballet as a patron since, like, 1997.

    I tried hard to channel my 16-year-old self and see the ballet how I imagine John was seeing it.  Sitting in the first row balcony at the beautiful Auditorium Theatre (ironically, where inom saw Paloma Herrera’s Juliet all those years ago), I pretty much succeeded at letting go of my critical eye and simply enjoying a night at the ballet.

    In light of this, initial thoughts were: entertaining, aesthetically stunning, and virtuoso.

    Biography

    George Tsypin is a sculptor, architect and set designer for operas, musicals, large-scale shows and installations. He has worked for many years with directors and composers such as Peter Sellars, Julie Taymor, Zhang Yimou, Francesca Zambello, Pierre Audi, Jurgen Flimm, Philip Glass, John Adams, Kaija Saariaho and Andrey Konchalovsky.

    His operatic creations have been produced worldwide, including at the Salzburg Festival, Opéra national de Paris, London's Royal Opera House, Milan's La Scala, St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre, Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre and New York's Metropolitan Opera. He has also worked in film and television. On Broadway, George Tsypin has worked as a set designer for musicals, including Walt Disney Theatrical Productions' The Little Mermaid. He designed the set for the musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.
