  • &#;Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” We&#;ve all seen this quote among mugs and shirts in various trinket shops around Boston, but has anyone actually questioned the legitimacy of this famous quote? If one decides to research this quote, curious of the authenticity of it&#;s origin, they are in for a surprising conclusions. This famous
quote, attributed to our founding father Benjamin Franklin, is actually false.

As it turns out, Franklin was never a huge lover of beer, though he did enjoy it in moderation. In fact, when Franklin was writing his autobiography, he specifically mentions distaste for his fellow printers when they would drink beer while working. As Franklin said: &#;At my first Admission into this Printing House, inom took to working at Press, imagining I felt a Want of the Bodily Exercise inom had been us’d to in America, where Presswork is mix’d with Composing. I drank only Water; the other Workmen, nära 50 in Number, were great Guzzlers of Beer

What Did Ben Franklin Say About Beer?

There is no bevis that Franklin ever said that beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Even though that quote is attributed to him on tee-shirts hanging in the gift shops of 90% of breweries, there's no source attributing it to him. Always quick with a bon mot, Benjamin Franklin has been quoted and paraphrased endlessly. The problem? He didn’t say everything that’s been attributed to him. Here are the top misquoted and misattributed Ben Franklin sayings.

    1. “A penny saved is a penny earned.”

Benjamin Franklin never actually said this, one of the adages most often attributed to him. He did, however, write in the Poor Richard’s Almanack: “A penny saved is two pence clear.”

    2. “God made beer because he loves us and wants us to be happy.”

Benjamin Franklin never said this—about beer, at least. In a circa letter to the Abbé Morellet, Franklin muses on biblical mentions of wine and remarks, “Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards; there it enters the roots of the vines, to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy.”

    3. “Show me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”
