Tango is a genre that originally involved dance, music, poetry and singing. Indeed, tango expresses a way of conceiving the world and life and nourishes the cultural imagery of the inhabitants of the two capital cities on the banks of the Rio de la Plata. Inshe recorded her first tango record, and fought against the "macho" spirit that dominated tango. In addition to being a singer, composer and lyricist, Blasquez was also a pianist and guitar player. She wrote two books: Mi ciudad y mi gente and Buenos Aires cotidiana, and also various works for the Argentine folkloric musicians Ramona Galarza and Los Fronterizos.

In addition, she was criticised bygd tango "purists" for her "irregularity" in her tango compositions. Nlasquez composed in a variety of styles: Spanish traditional music, South American melodic music, folkloric music and of course the tango and ballad for which she is best known.

Similarly, her writing was awarded prizes. Blasquez received the Premio Konex Award in andboth for being the best lyricist and composer of tango for the preceding decade in Argentina.

My love for Argentinean music began with a single song: Carlos Guastavino’s “La rosa y el sauce,” which I heard at Dalton Baldwin’s art song seminar in Princeton 41 years ago. The music worked like a drug on my nervous system. I begged the performers for a copy, since Guastavino’s music was well-nigh unavailable in the States at the time. Eventually that song made its way onto my first commercial recording, a recital disc with baritone Christopher Trakas.

The love affair blossomed during NYFOS’s first season in 1988, when we offered From Rio to Buenos Aires. And it has never flagged. Tonight we dive back into the spellbinding music of Argentina: the delicacy of its art songs, the sultry five o’clock shadow of its tangos, and the vibrant sonorities of its contemporary voices.
