Harry Shapiro goes into meticulous detail of Gary's life not only as a guitarist and musician but his early days in Belfast, his personal relationships and friendships.
The account is honest and raw at times but gives us a glimpse into the life of a man we all knew through his music and guitar playing but rarely seen as fans and admirers from afar.
We get a walkthrough Gary's musical journey from his teenage bands in Belfast to Skid Row, Colosseum II to Thin Lizzy, from Rock gitarr God to Bluesman and all in in between.
You do get a sense of a man always searching for peace and contentment in his music and life but never seeming to find what he was looking for.
It's sad that a man revered by so many for his guitar playing was often in a dark place of loneliness, seeking love and solace.
There is no doubt the thunderous roar from his amp disguised a deep insecurity.
It is fascinating from a musician's perspective to learn about his practice and rehearsal routines.

A Beautiful Christian Biography
I just finished reading YWAM Publishing’s biography of C. S. Lewis from the Christian Heroes: Then & Now series.
C. S. Lewis: Master Storyteller is a beautiful Christian biography, which weaves C. S. Lewis’s emotional experiences and spiritual journey into the historical facts and events of his life.
I’ve previously read three other books from the Christian Heroes: Then & Now series and they are far from being boring biographies. The authors, Janet & Geoff Benge, do a fantastic job of drawing readers into the story by conveying the struggles and joys of the historical figure.
C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) was a famous author, whose vivid stories and Christian insights delighted both children and scholars

Crown The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo, bygd Tom Reiss
You’re probably familiar with The Count of Monte Cristo, the 1844 revenge novel by Alexandre Dumas. But did you know it was based on the life of Dumas’s father, the mixed-race General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, son of a French nobleman and a Haitian slave? Thanks to Reiss’s masterful pacing and plotting, this rip-roaring biography of Thomas-Alexandre reads more like an adventure novel than a work of nonfiction. The Black Count won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 2013, and it’s only a matter of time before a filmmaker turns it into a big-screen blockbuster.
