| Re • Joseph P. Kennedy Sr.: Family PatriarchA Home in BrooklineWith his bank presidency, Joseph Kennedy was finally recognized as an eligible suitor for Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald. The two had been secretly courting for seven years despite the disapproval of her father, John F. Fitzgerald, the mayor of Boston. On October 7, 1914, Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald and Joseph Patrick Kennedy married. After their honeymoon, they moved into their new home at 83 Beals Street, Brookline, Massachusetts. While only 5 miles from East Boston, Brookline was a world away from the Irish immigrant community in which he was raised. That next summer, their first child, Joseph Patrick Kennedy Jr. was born. Their second son, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, was born at the family home on May 29, 1917. Over time the family grew to include seven more children: Rosemary (1918), Kathleen (1920), Eunice (1921), Patricia (1924), Robert (1925), Jean (1928), and Edward (1932).
