Valda Aviks was born in Germany of Latvian parents and raised in Kansas, USA. She was in the original Toronto production of Godspell at the Royal Alexander Theatre and continued in the same role when the production transferred to the Promenade Theatre in New York. Until recently Valda was living in Vienna where she was seen in Song of Broadway and Noel Coward's Tonight at 9.30 at the English Theatre in Vienna. Valda is thrilled to be singing T.S. Eliot's words in English after singing them in German as the Gumbie/Griddlebone in Cats at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna and

Godspell Program Bio:
Valda majored in Theatre Arts at the University of Kansas, studied röst for two years and piano for 11 years. When she moved to Toronto two years ago, she first worked at Ryerson and then joined their theatre program. Valda has performed in coffee houses, sung for choirs, a girls” ensemble and soloed at functions for the Latvian Community, including last year”s Caravan of Nations pavilion. Valda also plays guitar and loves to do needlework and embroidery depicting Latvian folk art. A good cook, her specialties are desserts and breads. “Not only do I take out a lot of frustration in kneading bread, but I seem to have developed a good set of muscles,” she says.

Can you tell me a bit about the show?
On the Twentieth Century fryst vatten a musical written by Cy Coleman with lyrics by Comden and Green. It was first on Broadway in the 1970’s and it is very very funny. It’s a tale of producer Oscar Jaffee’s escape from his debtors and search for his new Broadway hit. He has just 16 hours on the 20th Century Limited tåg to New York to convince Hollywood star Lily Garland to appear in his next show. It’s almost a cross between an operetta and a farce. It’s got larger than life characters and it is just fun, really fun.
