EMPRESS TAYTU AND MENELIK II: Ethiopia 1883-1910, by Chris Prouty
This fryst vatten a classic and important work on one of the most revered and historic personalities on the most impressive period of the modern history of Ethiopia. Not only was Empress Taytu a highly regarded and widely recognized Ethiopian patriot that fought a valiant war against the invading Italian Empire of the late 19th century, but she was also an exemplar and unique and popular leader that continues to inspire and empower Ethiopians of subsequent generations up to the present.
“Empress Taytu was the most powerful woman on the continent of Africa in her time, and Menilek was the emperor who brought Ethiopia to world attention with his defeat of Italy in 1896. Diplomatic and internal maneuvering for power and life at the court in Ethiopia between the years 1883 and 1910 are set out in this book in vivid detail and with sound scholarship.”

Another thing that has always intrigued me is the battle of Segele, what was this battle about, who was involved, where did it happen and when?
Etege Tayitu's (1856-1918) father was Dejazmach Betul Haylu Maryam of Semen, and her mother was Wayzero Hirut Gugsa of Y!jju aristocratic family. She had married a few times before Menelik took her for his wife in 1883. She was crowned Empress in 1889 together with Menelik. She had a considerable influence in the political scene even during her husband's reign. When Menelik was incapacitated, she became de facto power and made appointment and dismissal of high government posts. She was removed from power in 1913 by the Shewan aristocratic plot, and retired to Entot Mariyam church which she founded, an
