    Particularly marked by the work of the Nabis and the neo-impressionist movement, Ferdinand du Puigaudeau followed in the wake of impressionist painters. However, despite these multiple influences, the artist manages to develop a very singular and personal aesthetic.  Moreover, a large part of his work is in the tradition of the Flemish and French masters of the 17th century, from whom he inherited the beauty of his nocturnal lighting. The work of this artist is composed by a combination of the naturalist style of popular subjects and that of the synthetic theories of Pont-Aven. A master of light, his work with its bright colours is similar to the classical impressionist movement.

    As a young boy, du Puigaudeau was close to his uncle Henri de Chateaubriant, who encouraged his artistic pursuits. His education was traditional and he studied at various boarding schools from Paris to Nice. In , ni Puigaudeau travelled to Italy, then to Tunisia, and taught han själv to paint. The first work which can be safely attributed to du Puigaudeau was dated , the year he visited Pont-Aven where he befriended Charles Laval and Paul Gauguin with whom he decided to travel to Panama and Martinique, but was unable to do so as he was called up for military service In , he presented one of his works at the Salon of the Soci&#;t&#; Nationale des Beaux Arts at a time when his father had introduced him to the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel.

The first of his known works was dated in In that year he visited Pont-Aven. There, Puigaudeau befriended Charles Laval and Gauguin, with whom he decided to travel to Panama and Martinique. Unfortunately, Ferdinand was unable to join his friends, as he was enlisted. In he travelled to Belgium, where he met various members of the Groupe des XX. In , he presented one of his works at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts; his father introduced him to the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel who exhibited some of his works. He got married on 7 August in Saint-Nazaire, and had one daughter: Odette.
