The mother of a promising University of Chicago Law School student sobbed Thursday as she talked in a Cook County courtroom about how a crash caused by a man driving the wrong way on Lake Shore Drive while drunk had forever changed two families’ lives.
Judith Wasil’s son, Michael, 24, suffered traumatic brain injuries, while his friend Laura Anne LaPlante, 26, also a U. of C. law student, was killed. Both were three weeks from graduation from the prestigious school.
“Certain truths that I had always taken to be self-evident were instantly shattered,” said Wasil, whose son did not attend the hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building. “We were no longer a normal, happy family. My son was lying in a hospital bed hooked up to machines and fighting for his life. My family had suffered one of the worst tragedies a family can experience.”

A University of Chicago Law School student killed in a wrong-way crash on Lake Shore Drive was remembered Saturday as a beloved leader and friend.
Laura LaPlante, 26, of Hancock, N.H., already had a job at a Boston law firm lined up after her June graduation , a fellow classmate said. Instead the law school’s flag flew at half-staff Saturday in her honor.
LaPlante was pronounced dead at p.m. Friday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital after a man, whom police suspected had been drinking, drove a Subaru south in the northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive near Randolph Street and collided with the hyrbil she was in around a.m. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
“There are probably a bunch of people who would say they were good friends with Laura, which is true because she connected with people so well,” said Michael Lanahan, a classmate of Laura’s for three years who said he was among dozens of students
