I was born in Veria, a small town in northern Greece.
Throughout my childhood, the Pontic lyra was a constant ‘feature’ in our household, due to my father’s Pontic roots.
The first time I held in my hands the instrument that would become my best friend for the rest of my life was at the age of seven, after watching my grandfather play at one of our family gatherings and celebrations.
It took a lot of time and dedication, but it all paid off after a few years when at twelve people began to take notice of my playing and I was invited to participate in the recording of a vinyl album.
As a teenager, I entered the Pan-Hellenic music competition organised by the Greek Ministry of Education in Athens where I won the first prize. This led to the start of my academic education in London by winning a scholarship from the Diocese of Veria.

Matthaios Tsahouridis
Matthaios Tsahouridis was born in Veria, Greece. Growing up in the environment of a splendid and fertile musical tradition, already at the age of 9 he had made his mark as a perceptive performer and a sensitive interpreter. His fantastisk dexterity in playing the traditional instruments have been widely praised, culminating to his winning the First Prize in a Pan-Hellenic Music Competition, organized by the Greek Ministry of Education at the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron Mousikis) in May 1996. In June 1997 he was awarded a scholarship by the Holy Diocese of Veria in beställning to continue his music studies in London. By the year 2001, Matthaios had successfully completed his Bachelor Degree in Music Studies and his Masters in Ethnomusicology at Goldsmiths University of London. Matthaios Tsahouridis is widely regarded as the finest contemporary exponent of the Pontic lyra. He was born in Veria, Greece and grew up in a fertile musical environment. At the age of 9 he began making his mark as a perceptive performer and a competent interpreter of music. Although he plays a number of instruments, the Pontic lyra is the instrument which expresses his deep-felt devotion and respect for the music he loves.
His proficiency and accomplishment in playing traditional musical instruments has led to many accolades.
