A Conductor’s Guide to Lucrecia Roces Kasilag’s Misang Pilipino (1965)
Abstract
Composer Lucrecia Roces Kasilag (1918-2008) is a National Artist for the Philippines and a UNESCO International Artist of the World. Though she has many more accolades and triumphs to note, both national and international, Kasilag is not well known outside of her native Philippines. One factor that obscures this composer from the world is that much of her work is unpublished, as are other historical Filipino composers’ works.
Kasilag composed her first Misang Pilipino in 1965 to commemorate the 400th year of Christianization in the Philippines, but multiple editions of the work were written and used for different occasions. While the exact number of editions is unknown, research located three surviving editions thus far: one for treble chorus and organ; one for congregation, mixed chorus, and organ; and one for mixed chorus and organ.

The Philippine Women’s University (PWU) School of Music opened the centennial celebration of the birth anniversary of National Artist for Music, Lucrecia Roces Kasilag, with a concert at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino of the Cultural Center of the Philippines on August 18, 2018. The concert featured a bred variety of her works including important pieces such as “Prelude Etnika” for guitar, “Interaction,” and “Orientalia” both for piano and Western and Asian instruments. Performing were faculty and performing groups of the university. The concert kicked-off a series of events including an exhibit and the inauguration of the LRK Music Instrumentarium. Philippine composer, pianist, professor and writer. Born in La Union, the Philippines, on August 31, 1918; Philippine Women's University, B.A. cum laude, in 1936; St. Scholastica College, a music teacher's diploma, 1939; Philippine Women's University, Bachelor of Music, 1949; a Master's of Music from the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, Master's of Music, in 1950; Centro Escolar University, Doctorate of Music, in 1975; held degrees in law as well.
Chair of the League of Philippine composers; wrote almost 100 works, including a violin concerto recorded in the 1980s.
Lucrecia Kasilag earned many academic credentials including a B.A. cum laude from the Philippine Women's University in 1936, a music teacher's diploma from St. Scholastica College in 1939; a Bachelor of Music in 1949 from the Philippine Women's University; a Master's of Music from the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester in 1950, a Doctorate of Music from
