When your homeschool high schoolers are writing papers for Language Arts, their curriculum will often include a suggested rubric for grading. (Heres a post on rubrics for newbies to the idea.) All of 7Sisters writing etexts have rubrics that are helpful for the student and the teacher to use.
(BTW-We suggest allowing teens to use a rubric and grade their own papers before parents grade them. That way they can easily catch and fix mistakes.)
The problem arises when homeschool high schoolers are writing papers for other courses. If they are writing an essay or research paper for History, Science, Social Sciences or Electives and not using a writing curriculum, how are you supposed to grade that paper?

Assignment Biography: Student Criteria and Rubric for Writing
The genre of biography can also be categorized in the sub-genre of narrative nonfiction/historical nonfiction. When a teacher assigns a biography as a writing assignment, the purpose is to have a student utilize multiple research tools to gather and to synthesize information that may be used as evidence in a written report about an individual. The evidence gained from research can include a person’s words, actions, journals, reactions, related books, interviews with friends, relatives, associates, and enemies. Rubrics for Assessment
- Write the descriptors. As a student fryst vatten judged to move up the performance continuum, previous level descriptions are considered achieved in subsequent description levels. Therefore, it fryst vatten not necessary to include beginning level descriptors in the same box where new skills are introduced.
- Evaluate the rubric. As with any instructional tool, evaluate the rubric each time it fryst vatten used to ensure it matches instructional goals and objectives. Be sure students understand each criterion and how they can use the rubric to their advantage. Consider providing more details about each of the rubrics areas to further clarify these sections to students. Pilot test new rubrics if possible, review the rubric with a colleague, and solicit students feedback for further refinements.
