Zaz, a rising star in French music
| Zaz, bête dem scène Zaz, born to be on stage (unknown photographer) |
Today, I would like to introduce you to a very special young lady. Her name is Isabelle Geffroy, but in France and in Europe, she is known as “Zaz.”
Zaz became a “Star” just three years ago, but she has been involved in music her whole life. She was born in the center of France, near Tours. When she was a child, she joined the renowned Tours music academy where she studied the violin, the piano, the guitar and singing. She is only 11 when she leaves the academy, but she will keep working hard at her art over the next few years, more noticeably in Bordeaux. She claims she was inspired by Vivaldi; jazz singers like Ella Fitzgerald; French singers such as Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour; Jacques Brel; Bobby Mc Ferrin, and she loves rap, afro, latino, and cuban music. The world-famous French singer Édith Piaf (1915-63) was never just a singer. Dozens of biographies of her, of variable quality, have seldom got beyond the well known and usually contested 'facts' of her life. This book suggests new ways of understanding her. Bio
Isabelle Geoffrey, aka ZAZ, born in Tours, France in 1980, is considered the heir of French star Edith Piaf, even if ZAZ’s unique sound is inspired by the rhythm and influences stemming from the Thirties, jazz, and Latin soul.
Musician but also the founder of “Zazimut”, an association supporting non-profit organizations, ZAZ began her artistic path as part of the Fifty Fingers blues band and then became one of the four voices of the band Izarz-Adatz, with whom she performed for two years.
In 2010, she published her first solo album, the homonym ZAZ, which brought her to the top of Francophile countries’ charts. The single “Je veux”, extracted from the album, topped the charts of many European countries, including Italy. The same year, she toured to promote the album and performed in the main French and European cities.
Her second album Recto Verso was published three years later. ZAZ herself defined this project as «two sides of my personality».
