In early 2011, Damascus was witnessing the rise of a revolution. The world was beginning to notice a rebirth occurring in the Syrian capital and from all corners of the globe, it was being watched with a wary eye. Art had seized the city and the force of this renaissance was reverberating far beyond its ancient walls. People were flying to Damascus to buy art, and Syrian artists were being flown out to exhibit their work in New York, Paris and London. The renaissance thrived in its youth, until suddenly, it was to meet a premature end at the break-out of another, more heated revolution. Paintbrushes are no match for firearms and as we were deafened by coverage of bombings, airstrikes, ISIS videos and refugee debates, we became blind to Syria’s art.
Isolated from their artist’s circles and exiled from their homeland, the clear voice of the Syrian artist which had been forming was lost. Born in Damascus, in Syria, in 1980, Tammam received his formal training from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Damascus, with a concentration in oil painting. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions, all around Europe and the Middle East. Forced to flee the war in his own country, since 2011, Tammam Azzam has been living and working in Dubai. Left out of his art studio, he moved into a form of digital art. He became known for digitally superimposing Western masterpieces onto photographs of Syrian bombed buildings. He also attracted the attention of Bristolian street artist Banksy and was invited in his very special exhibition named Dismaland, last summer, settled for six weeks in Weston-Super-Mare, • Born in Damascus, Syria in 1980 Tammam Azzam trained at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus, specialising in oil painting. Forced to flee the war, he left Syria for Dubai in 2011, and has lived and worked in Germany since 2015. The artist has been invited to numerous monographic and collective exhibitions, including at the Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana (Slovenia, 2013), and the Ayyam Gallery in Beirut (2013), London (2013), Dubai (2012, 2009) and Damascus (2010). In 2014, Tammam Azzam participated in FotoFest in Houston, Texas. “Syrian artist Tammam Azzam has created a hybrid form of painting” is how the Ayyam Gallery describes him, thanks to the use of various media, which enable “interactions between the surface and form eller gestalt, which enter into dialogue as the compositions evolve.” During the summer of 2015, he attracted the attention of street artist Banksy, and was invited to his Dismaland
