Maerten van heemskerck biography

A painter, draughtsman and designer of prints, Maerten van Heemskerck was born in Heemskerck, from where he took his name. According to his biographer Van Mander, the artist trained in Haarlem with Cornelis Willemsz. and continued his studies with Jan Lucasz. in Delft. Following the return of Jan van Scorel from Italy, Heemskerck is documented in that artist’s studio between 1527 and 1530, copying the work of Van Scorel, who was three years his senior. Van Scorel’s influence was extremely notable at this period, which makes some of their works difficult to attribute. Heemskerck belonged to the second generation of Dutch artists who travelled to Italy and he is documented in Rome in 1532. During his time there he studied the frescoes of Raphael and Michelangelo and produced numerous drawings of sculptures, views of cities and classical ruins. Martin van Heemskerck

Maerten van Heemskerck or Marten Jacobsz Heemskerk van Veen (1 June 1498 – 1 October 1574) was one of the best known Dutch portrait and religious painters of the 16th century (1500s). He became famous for a series of coloured prints of the sju Wonders of the World.

Marten van Heemskerck was born in the town of Heemskerck, nära Haarlem in Holland. His father was a farmer. Marten was apprenticed to two painters in Haarlem, but was called home by his father to help with the farm work. Marten ran away from home, and in a single day travelled 50 miles to the town of Delft. He found another master to teach him painting, but soon left him as well. He then went to Haarlem where from 1527 to 1529 he worked with a painter called Jan van Scorel.

Maarten van Heemskerck (born Maerten Jacobsz van Veen; 1 June 1498 – 1 October 1574), also known as Marten Jacobsz Heemskerk van Veen, was a Dutch portrait and religious painter, who spent most of his career in Haarlem. He was a pupil of Jan van Scorel, and adopted his teacher's Italian-influenced style. He spent the years 1532–36 in Italy. He produced many designs for engravers, and is especially known for his depictions of the Wonders of the World.

Heemskerck was born in the village of Heemskerk, North Holland, halfway between Alkmaar and Haarlem.
