A Potted History Of William The Conqueror
When we think about 25th December, we generally think about it as Christmas Day. It is one of the main public holidays in many countries and a day to come together for friends and family. However, think about a very famous person – William the Conqueror – and his links to this day. You might not know that on this day, way back in 1066, he was crowned King of England. This followed his defeat of King Harald at the Battle of Hastings.

William was the first Norman king of England and held this prestigious title from 1066 through to his death in 1087. Before this, he was Duke of Normandy, in France. When William claimed the throne and became king of England, he had completed what is well-known today as the Norman Conquest. And he also acquired the equally well-known moniker of William the Conqueror.

Potted Biography #5: William Aris Alen, Mortlake artist and Taxidermist, 1847-1929.
William Aris Alen lived at Mortlake for some fifty years from the late 1870s onwards and was not only one of the town’s painters and decorators but was the district’s resident artist and taxidermist.
Born at Poplar in the East End of London in 1847, 17 year-old William set sail for a new life in Australia, arriving in Brisbane in 1863 or 1864. Soon afterwards he set sail for Adelaide but then went on to Port Fairy and finally to Warrnambool where he would remain for the next twelve years.
In 1869 at Warrnambool William married Irish girl Rosehanna Beggs. They had six children while still at Warrnambool but by 1878 the family had arrived in Mortlake where they would have four more children. They lived at 15 Kerr Street.

Potted Biography
William Sutton comes from Dunblane, Scotland. He has written for The Times and the Fortean Times, acted in the longest play in the world, and played cricket for Brazil. His first novel is a Victorian mystery of a gleaming metropolis mired in corruption.
He writes for international magazines about language, music and futurology. His plays have been produced on radio and in London fringe theatres. He has performed at events from the Edinburgh Festival to High Down Prison, often with a ukulele. He teaches Latin and plays accordion with chansonnier Philip Jeays.
Longer Story
I was born in Stirling, Scotland, in 1970. I played rock piano, badly, in my school band The Polemics, while Dallas Campbell Morrisseyed it up and Graham Chalkley played bass. After learning blues harmonica from my Latin teacher, Alwyn James, I drove to California in a Volkswagen beetle.
I got a classics degree despite writing plays th
